Roman Herb Collection.

The Romans utilised herbs for various purposes, including culinary, medicinal, religious, and aesthetic uses. Common herbs used by the Romans included mint, rosemary, thyme, basil, sage, oregano, lavender, dill, fennel, parsley, cumin, coriander, chamomile, rue, and lovage.

Mint was used to flavor food and drinks, aiding digestion and freshening breath. Rosemary was used as a seasoning and symbol of remembrance, with medicinal properties such as memory improvement and muscle pain alleviation. Thyme was used in cooking to add flavor to meats and vegetables, and was believed to have antiseptic and antibacterial properties. Basil was considered the "royal herb" and used in religious ceremonies. Sage was used in stuffings, meats, and cheese, and was valued for its medicinal properties. Origano was used to add flavor to sauces and roasts, and lavender was used in baths and perfumes.

The study of herbs and their uses was a serious practice, with specialized doctors known as "herbarii" who focused on their medicinal properties.

This Roman Herb Collection comprises fourteen herbs to enable you to grow your own Roman herb garden with floral, aromatic and culinary interest and benefit for bees and hoverfly pollinators.

Design of a herbary that exploits a sunny spot in a difficult corner is often creative and fulfilling.

Use of paving, gravel mulch and stone (including tasteful deployment of re-cycled broken concrete and old slabs where desired), is recommended. This texture and colour if well drained is invaluable in reflecting light and radiating heat. This microclimate enables herbs to thrive and best exhibit their disparate vibrancy, colour, form and fragrance.

Incorporate a seat and a sympathetic focal point such as a favoured bird bath, and you have a special place to sit and contemplate!

The herb seeds offered in this larger than usual collection offers a saving over buying individual packets.
