Sage (Salvia officinalis)

Sage is a popular herb known for its aromatic leaves and culinary use. It is easy to grow from seed. Sage seeds should be sown in spring after the last frost date, or can be started indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost date. To prepare the seeds, soak them in lukewarm water for 24-48 hours. Press seeds gently into freely draining compost with added grit or vermiculite if needed, but do not cover seeds completely as they need light to germinate. After sowing, keep the soil moist but not saturated, provide plenty of sunlight, and ensure they are not exposed to cold drafts. Transplant seedlings to grow on and harden-off carefully by introducing them to outdoor conditions gradually, before planting outside after risk of frost.

Sage prefers a sunny location with well-draining soil and at final planting should be spaced 12-18 inches apart and watered well.  Fertilising needs are minimal but a balanced organic fertiliser can be applied sparingly in the spring. Caring for the sage by pinching back the tips, lightly pruning in the spring and deadheading dead flowers. Harvest fully developed leaves when young for using fresh or drying for storage.
